Introduction
Fawkes is a bare-metal deployment and management solution for high-performance computing. It is an open-source tool that runs on bare-metal servers, and leverages Ansible and libvirt for the orchestration and deployment of virtual machines as well as additional hypervisor servers.
Fawkes Architecture
The Fawkes architecture
- Linux OS
-
SuSE’s Linux Enterprise Server operating system with as minimum of a package/dependency footprint as we can muster for a small CVE footprint.
- libvirt
-
An open-source virtualization API for managing virtual machines.
- Kubernetes
-
An infrastructure language for scaling and managing containerized solutions that runs on the Fawkes virtual machines.
- CEPH
-
A non-virtualized S3 bucket storage service
HPC Support
Fawkes is designed with its friends in mind, after deploying bare-metal with Fawkes a cluster can support the deployment of:
- Cray System Management
-
An HPC management system produced by CRAY, The original supercomputer company.
- HPCM
-
(High-Performance Cluster Management) tooling produced by Hewlett-Packard Enterprise.
